                 VW VIN Decoder

This JavaScript has been put together by Rob of CYBERTECTS and we are grateful for his permission to share with the VW community.

Enter the VIN number of your Volkswagen into the VIN box at the top, tab out of the field and the information about it will be displayed below. It should work for most VW cars with a 17 digit VIN code (built after 1980). (Example: WVWZZZ53ZCW000001)

For those with a 9- or 10-digit VIN (Chassis Number) built after 1965 but before 1980. The information encoded in the VIN is limited to year and body type. (Example: 1132000001)

N.B. This is an alpha version, there may be bugs and errors.

The data was gathered from various sources including assistance from the ABVWC. If you have any corrections, please let me know.

Usage Notes:

'Z' is used by VW as a 'filler' character in VIN codes. This means the information for that particular part of the VIN is not provided. You'll see them come up as 'undefined' in the VIN Decoder.

Production year runs from August to July. So a car manufactured in October 1992, will be a 1993 model according to the VIN.

This database only gives the description of the VW as it left the VW factory. It does not hold information on modifications that have been carried out on the vehicle subsequently.

Legal disclaimer: Please don't rely on this to check the identity of a car before buying, it's intended purely for entertainment.
